How long each finish lasts in Arizona
| Finish | Lifespan claims |
|---|---|
| White plaster / marcite | 7–12 years in Arizona (Swimming Pool Service & Repair[3]; AJ's Signature Pools says most Valley plaster lasts 7–12 years[5]); 7–10 years (AZL Pools[4]); about 10 years if applied properly (Angi[1]). |
| Quartz | 10–15 years (Swimming Pool Service & Repair[3]). |
| Pebble (Pebble Tec, Pebble Sheen) | 15–25 years in Arizona (Swimming Pool Service & Repair[3]; AZL Pools[4]); 20+ years (Angi[1]). |
| Paint / epoxy | 2–5 years (Angi[1]). One Valley company says coatings peel within 2–3 years in Arizona sun and does not recommend them[3]. |
Arizona notes: hard water, calcium and heat
- The water is hard. The City of Phoenix reports total hardness of 172–302 ppm (10–17.6 grains per gallon) in its distribution system, and explains that hardness comes from minerals such as calcium and magnesium that the source water picks up from soils[2]. Other Valley cities publish their own water quality reports; check yours.
- Hard water and UV wear finishes faster, according to local companies. Swimming Pool Service & Repair says plaster lasts less in Arizona because Phoenix hard water and UV degrade it faster, and that plaster shows calcium buildup sooner than pebble or quartz[3]. Moorea Pools writes that "Arizona sun and hard water take a toll on pool finishes over time"[6]. Angi lists extreme heat, UV exposure, hard water and mineral buildup as causes of pool surface damage in Phoenix[1].
- Calcium balance can affect your warranty. One Valley company says keeping calcium hardness at 200–400 ppm (with pH 7.2–7.6 and alkalinity 80–120 ppm) is critical to keeping its warranty valid[7]. AJ's Signature Pools warns that unmanaged cyanuric acid, high total dissolved solids and improper calcium hardness can ruin even an expensive surface in 3–5 years[5]. Ask each company what water-chemistry terms its warranty requires.
- Warranties differ. As one example, Moorea Pools describes a 10-year product warranty on pebble (depending on the job) and a 3-year warranty on plaster[6]. Get the warranty in writing and ask who backs it: the applicator, the finish manufacturer, or both.
Before you sign
- Get 2–3 written quotes for the same finish, tile and coping scope.
- If a brand is quoted (for example Pebble Tec), confirm installer status with the manufacturer[8].
- Ask how the pool will be drained and refilled, and whether your city has rules on discharging pool water.
- Ask your city whether the job needs a permit.
